Overview

The term refers to the use of self-expanding stents, most notably fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FCSEMS), to provide mechanical support and maintain the patency of a narrowed or strictured anatomical lumen, such as the bile duct. This mechanical support is not mediated by a molecular target but by the physical property of the device exerting outward pressure upon deployment to keep the duct open. FCSEMS are used for both benign and malignant biliary strictures and can prevent recurrent narrowing by maintaining lumen patency. However, they are accompanied by specific complications such as stent migration, infection, and sometimes cause secondary problems like cholecystitis or ductal occlusion.
