Overview

This procedure, commonly referred to as debridement or irrigation, is essential in wound management and dentistry to reduce the microbial bioburden and disrupt resilient biofilms that prevent healing (PubMed, 22026514). By removing these physical and biological barriers, the procedure allows the transition from a chronic inflammatory state to the proliferative phase of tissue repair. While it is not a protein or receptor that drugs bind to, various pharmacological agents like enzymatic debriders or surfactants are often used in conjunction to enhance the efficacy of the physical removal.
