Mechanical removal of wound debris

Overview

Mechanical debridement is a wound care technique that removes necrotic tissue, debris, and foreign material from wounds using physical methods such as irrigation, wet-to-dry dressings, monofilament pads, soft brushing, or specialized surgical instruments. This approach is used to help create an optimal healing environment, reduce infection risk, and enhance wound bed preparation, but is not selective for dead tissue and may cause discomfort or inadvertent removal of viable tissue. It is not a molecular entity and thus not a bona fide drug target[1][2][3][4][5].
