The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that serves as a central regulator of cell growth, metabolism, proliferation, survival, and autophagy. It integrates signals from nutrients, growth factors, energy status, and cellular stress to coordinate anabolic and catabolic processes. It exists in two distinct complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2, with differing functions and sensitivities to rapamycin.
