Overview

The mechanosensitive channel of large conductance (MscL) is a bacterial membrane protein that acts as a safety valve, protecting cells from lysis during sudden decreases in external osmolarity. It opens a large, non-selective pore in response to increased membrane tension, allowing solutes and water to exit the cell. Absent from eukaryotes, MscL is an attractive target for novel antibacterial agents.
