The mediator complex subunit 13 pseudogene (ENSG00000253472, LOC100420127) is a nonfunctional segment of DNA that resembles the gene encoding Mediator complex subunit 13 (MED13). Pseudogenes such as this one arise through gene duplication or reverse transcription events, but due to disabling mutations—such as premature stop codons or frameshifts—they do not encode a functional protein. Most pseudogenes have no known biological activity, though some may be transcribed at low levels and, in certain instances, pseudogene transcripts can modulate gene expression by acting as decoys for microRNAs or through other noncoding mechanisms. This particular pseudogene is not recognized as a receptor or enzymatic therapeutic target, and does not have known associations with diseases, approved drugs, or recognized safety concerns.
