Medulla Oblongata

Molecular classification
Brainstem Structure, Central Nervous System Region
01

Overview

The medulla oblongata is the lowest part of the brainstem, located at the base of the brain where it connects to the spinal cord. It serves as a critical conduit for nerve signals traveling between the brain and body, and is essential for regulating many involuntary (autonomic) bodily functions necessary for life. It contains numerous nuclei, including those responsible for cardiovascular and respiratory control, as well as reflexes like vomiting, coughing, and swallowing. Damage to this region can be life-threatening.
