MEF2-activating motif and SAP domain-containing transcriptional regulator (MAMSTR) is a member of the myocardin-related transcriptional coactivators that functions as a key facilitator of MEF2 (myocyte enhancer factor 2)-dependent gene expression, particularly in skeletal muscle. MAMSTR acts as a transcriptional coactivator, directly interacting with MEF2 proteins to activate muscle-specific enhancers and promote the expression of regulators such as MyoD[1][6][7]. Inhibition of MAMSTR impairs myoblast differentiation and muscle regeneration, highlighting its critical role in myogenesis and satellite cell function[1]. MAMSTR is predicted to act primarily in the nucleus, with additional roles in the broader regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II[5]. While not a traditional therapeutic target like receptors or enzymes, MAMSTR's function in muscle biology has implications for regenerative medicine and livestock genetic traits[1].
