Megakaryocyte maturation is a complex, multi-step process by which hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow differentiate into mature megakaryocytes, the large polyploid cells responsible for producing blood platelets. This process involves dramatic changes in cell size, ploidy (DNA content), cytoplasmic structure, and gene expression. The primary function of mature megakaryocytes is to generate platelets (thrombocytes), which are essential for hemostasis and wound repair. Platelet production occurs through the extension of proplatelet processes from mature megakaryocytes into bone marrow sinusoids, where they fragment to release platelets into circulation.
