Overview

The meibomian gland is a large, specialized sebaceous gland located within the tarsal plates of the eyelids. Its primary function is to secrete meibum, an oily substance that forms the outermost layer of the tear film, preventing evaporation and maintaining tear film stability. Dysfunction of these glands leads to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a major cause of evaporative dry eye disease.
