Overview
Meibomian gland secretion (meibum) is an oily substance produced by the meibomian glands in the eyelids. It forms the outermost layer of the tear film, reducing evaporation, stabilizing tears, and protecting the ocular surface. Meibum consists primarily of nonpolar lipids (wax esters, cholesterol esters, cholesterol) and polar lipids (phospholipids). Dysfunction in meibum production leads to evaporative dry eye disease.
