Meiosis initiator protein (MEIOSIN) is a DNA-binding transcription factor essential for the initiation of meiosis in both male and female germ cells. MEIOSIN forms a complex with STRA8 to directly activate the transcription of a subset of critical meiotic genes, thereby governing the cell-cycle switch from mitosis to meiosis. Its expression and function are required for meiotic entry and for the activation of genetic programs needed for meiotic prophase, particularly during spermatogenesis[1][3][5][7]. The protein features both a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain and a high mobility group (HMG)-box domain, supporting roles in DNA binding and chromatin regulation[2][4][5]. There are no known therapeutic drugs, biomarker roles, or major safety/tolerability issues associated with MEIOSIN, as its primary relevance is in developmental biology rather than as a therapeutic target.
