MEIOC is essential for the proper progression and completion of meiosis in both male and female germ cells. It stabilizes a wide range of meiotic mRNAs in the gonads, enabling correct initiation and extension of meiotic prophase I. MEIOC’s role involves interaction with YTHDC2, an RNA helicase, supporting proper transition from a mitotic to meiotic cell cycle program independently of retinoic acid induction. Diseases associated with MEIOC include male infertility and possibly Laurence-Moon syndrome. MEIOC acts as a regulatory protein rather than a therapeutic target or receptor.
