Melan-A, also known as MART-1, is a transmembrane protein and a melanocyte differentiation antigen. It is expressed in normal melanocytes, retina, and most melanocytic tumors. A peptide fragment from Melan-A can be presented by MHC class I molecules to cytotoxic CD8+ T lymphocytes, making it an important target for immune recognition in melanoma and a model antigen for studying T-cell responses. It is used as a diagnostic marker for melanocytic lesions and is being investigated as a target for cancer vaccines.
