The melanocyte differentiation pathway refers to the series of molecular events that govern how neural crest-derived precursor cells become mature melanocytes capable of producing melanin pigment. Key regulators include transcription factors such as microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), SOX10, PAX3; cell surface receptors like c-KIT; and downstream effectors including enzymes involved in melanin synthesis such as tyrosinase (TYR) and related proteins (TYRP1, TYRP2/DCT).
