Melanocyte stem cells (McSCs) are undifferentiated, neural crest-derived cells primarily located in the hair follicle. They serve as the progenitor population responsible for generating differentiated melanocytes, which are essential for pigmentation of skin and hair during normal tissue homeostasis and repair. These stem cells play a critical role in maintaining periodic cycles of hair pigmentation by replenishing mature melanocytes lost during each hair follicle cycle. McSCs are long-lived progenitors residing mainly within the bulge region of hair follicles. Their unique properties—multipotency, migratory ability—make them central not only to basic biology but also translational research focused on treating pigmentary disorders or leveraging their plasticity in regenerative medicine applications.
