Overview

MAGEA1 is a member of the MAGEA gene family and is classified as a cancer/testis antigen (CTA). It is normally expressed in the testis but is aberrantly expressed in various tumors, making it an attractive target for cancer immunotherapy. MAGEA1 functions as a transcriptional repressor and interacts with histone deacetylases, influencing gene expression and chromatin structure. It also plays a role in the Notch signaling pathway and is involved in multiprotein complexes, such as the TRIM31-MAGEA1-NSE4 complex, suggesting roles in ubiquitination pathways. Its immunogenic epitopes are recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which is exploited in immunotherapeutic approaches.
