Target intelligence / Profile preview

Melanoma-associated antigen 3

Molecular classification
Cancer/testis antigen, MAGE family protein
01

Overview

Melanoma-associated antigen 3 (MAGE-A3) is a cancer/testis antigen expressed in germ cells and various cancers, but not in most normal tissues except testis. It functions as an activator for RING-type zinc finger-containing E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases and acts as a repressor of autophagy. Its restricted expression and immunogenicity make it an attractive target for cancer immunotherapy, particularly cancer vaccines. Expression levels may correlate with prognosis in certain cancers, but this can vary.
