Overview

Melanoma-associated antigen 9B (MAGEA9B) is a protein-coding gene that is a paralog and duplication of the canonical MAGEA9 gene. It belongs to the MAGE (melanoma antigen) family, which is characterized primarily as cancer/testis antigens with restricted expression in adult somatic tissues except for the testis and various cancers. Although MAGEA9B shares sequence similarities with other MAGEA genes that regulate cellular processes such as apoptosis, survival, and ubiquitination by interacting with E3 ubiquitin ligases, specific functional data for MAGEA9B are lacking. MAGE family proteins have been implicated in driving tumorigenesis and predicting poor prognosis in a variety of cancers. There is genetic linkage to rare hereditary disorders such as terminal osseous dysplasia.
