Overview
Allergenic proteins from the feathers of Melopsittacus undulatus (budgerigar) are environmental allergens inducing allergic reactions in sensitized individuals. Major allergenic bands have been detected at 20–30 kDa and 67 kDa. Exposure is associated with asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, Bird Fancier’s Asthma, and Bird-Egg Syndrome. Diagnosis involves detecting specific IgE antibodies. Cross-reactivity with other avian species exists.
