Overview

Membrane-anchored junction protein (MAJIN) is a meiosis-specific telomere-associated protein anchored to the inner nuclear membrane. It is essential for the proper attachment of telomeric DNA to the nuclear envelope during meiotic prophase I, facilitating homologous chromosome pairing and synapsis. Acting as an anchoring subunit in the MAJIN-TERB1-TERB2 complex, it stabilizes telomere localization at the nuclear envelope and is crucial for fertility, as knockout studies result in defective meiosis and infertility. MAJIN is predicted to exhibit DNA binding activity, and participates upstream in processes like double-strand break repair, oogenesis, and spermatogenesis. Its dysfunction is associated with rare developmental disorders but not with cancer or common therapeutic areas.
