Membrane-embedded proteins are a diverse group of proteins that reside within, or are attached to, cellular membranes[1][9][10]. These proteins can be categorized as integral membrane proteins (which span the membrane and are permanent), peripheral membrane proteins (which temporarily associate with the membrane), and lipid-anchored proteins[1][10][7]. Their molecular families include ion channels, transporters, enzymes, receptors, adhesion molecules, and structural scaffolds. These proteins serve critical biological functions such as mediating signal transduction, transporting ions and molecules, catalyzing metabolic reactions, facilitating cell recognition and intercellular junctions, and maintaining membrane integrity[4][1][6][7][9][10]. Membrane proteins are major therapeutic targets in medicine and play important roles in health and disease, including cancer, neurodegeneration, inflammation, infection, and metabolic disorders[4][5]. Targeting these proteins pharmacologically can alter cellular function, but can also pose safety risks due to their essential and ubiquitous functions.
