Membrane progesterone receptors (mPRs) are a group of membrane-associated, high-affinity receptors that mediate rapid, non-genomic actions of progesterone and related progestogens. Unlike the classical nuclear progesterone receptor (nPR), mPRs are located primarily on the plasma membrane but can also be found in intracellular compartments. They belong to the Progestin and AdipoQ Receptor (PAQR) family and have five main isoforms: mPRα, mPRβ, mPRγ, mPRδ, and mPRε. mPRs mediate rapid cellular responses via activation of G proteins, leading to modulation of second messengers such as cAMP or calcium ions. They are involved in both reproductive functions (e.g., oocyte maturation) and non-reproductive roles (e.g., neuroprotection, possible roles in immune response and cancer biology).
