Overview

Membrane progesterone receptor gamma (mPRγ), also known as PAQR5, is a member of the membrane progesterone receptor (mPR) family, which are part of the progestin and adipoQ receptor (PAQR) superfamily. These receptors mediate rapid, non-genomic actions of progesterone at the cell membrane, distinct from classical nuclear progesterone receptors. Upon ligand binding, mPRγ activates intracellular signaling pathways via coupling to G proteins—specifically through Gi-mediated pathways that can inhibit cAMP production and modulate other second messenger systems. mPRγ and other mPR subtypes mediate various reproductive functions such as oocyte maturation in teleost fishes and possibly mammals; they may also play roles in immune modulation and neuroprotection by mediating fast responses to progestogens at or near the plasma membrane rather than through gene transcription regulation.
