Overview

Membrane-spanning 4-domains subfamily A member 4E (MS4A4E) is a member of the MS4A gene family, which encodes proteins with four potential transmembrane domains and intracellular N- and C-termini[3][1]. MS4A4E is found mainly in peripheral blood, spleen, liver, and skin[1]. Although its specific molecular or cellular function has not been characterized, MS4A4E is structurally related to other MS4A proteins, many of which serve as tetraspanin-like molecules involved in membrane signaling and ion transport[1][3]. MS4A4E is expressed in immune-related cells such as basophils and monocytes, as well as some dendritic cells, macrophages, and NK cells[2]. There are currently no reports of direct endogenous ligands, drugs, or well-defined physiological roles specific for this protein. Importantly, elevated expression of MS4A4E mRNA in glioma tissue suggests potential utility as a diagnostic biomarker, and differential expression has also been noted in Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions[1][4]. No safety or therapeutic concerns have been reported specifically for MS4A4E, and no drugs are currently known to target it directly.
