This mechanism is crucial for maintaining immune homeostasis, terminating immune responses after pathogen clearance, and preventing autoimmunity by deleting autoreactive or excess effector/memory T cells. The primary pathway is activation-induced cell death (AICD), mainly mediated via the extrinsic apoptotic pathway involving death receptors such as Fas (CD95/APO-1) and its ligand FasL (CD95L).
