Overview

Memory enhancement refers to the biological and pharmacological improvement of the brain's capacity to encode, store, and retrieve information [3, 9, 11]. It is not a discrete molecular target but rather a multifaceted therapeutic objective achieved by modulating various neurochemical pathways involved in synaptic plasticity and neurotransmission [2, 12, 18]. Key systems targeted for enhancement include the cholinergic system (via acetylcholine receptors), the glutamatergic system (via NMDA and AMPA receptors), and downstream signaling cascades involving cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and neurotrophic factors [3, 6, 7]. Clinically, memory enhancement is the primary goal for treating cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, typically utilizing acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists [16, 18]. In addition to clinical applications, the use of 'nootropics' by healthy individuals for cognitive optimization has driven interest in novel targets such as phosphodiesterases and specific epigenetic regulators [12, 19].

Mechanism of action
