MerTK is a receptor tyrosine kinase that belongs to the TAM family. It plays a crucial role in signal transduction, phagocytosis/efferocytosis, and immune regulation. It is essential for the clearance of apoptotic cells and modulating cytokine production, thereby preventing systemic autoimmune diseases. It has oncogenic roles in cancer, promoting angiogenesis, migration/invasion, and cell survival, making it a therapeutic target. However, its anti-inflammatory functions must be considered to avoid exacerbating inflammation-associated cancers.
