Overview

The term **经络** (jingluo) refers to the **meridian system** in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a hypothesized network of invisible channels through which the life energy (*qi*) is thought to flow within the human body. These meridians are believed to connect internal organs (zang-fu) and regulate the flow of qi and blood, thus sustaining health and preventing disease[3][4][5][6]. The concept includes both main channels (“jingmai”) and their branches (“luomai”) and is central to practices such as acupuncture, where stimulating points along these pathways is said to influence bodily functions[4][7]. From a scientific and biomedical perspective, **meridians are not recognized as anatomical or molecular structures**; there is no verified evidence supporting their physical existence or any molecular entity corresponding to them[3][7]. Instead, some modern interpretations relate meridians metaphorically to connective tissue networks or physiological signaling pathways, but these analogies remain unproven and are not widely accepted in mainstream science[2][6]. Thus, **经络 is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other molecularly defined therapeutic target**. Attempts have been made to study their basis using modern techniques, but results are inconclusive and do not provide molecular substantiation[4][6]. No drugs, biomarkers, or accepted mechanisms of action are associated specifically with meridians, nor are there clinical safety concerns connected to this construct as a pharmacological target. Its use in TCM is rooted in cultural and philosophical systems distinct from contemporary biomedical science.
