Meridian system regulation

Molecular classification
Other (conceptual, not molecular; sometimes theorized as extracellular matrix, fascia, neural, or bioelectrical structures, but none are universally accepted)
01

Overview

The **meridian system** is a foundational concept in traditional Chinese medicine, describing an invisible network of channels ("meridians" or "jingluo") that allegedly conduct Qi (life-energy) throughout the body. According to TCM, disease arises from disrupted flow in this system, and therapies such as acupuncture, massage, herbal remedies, and Qigong are used to "regulate" the meridian system and restore health[1][2][3][5][8]. Scientific investigations have repeatedly failed to identify anatomical, physiological, or molecular correlates for meridians, and the concept is not accepted in modern biomedical science. "Meridian system regulation" refers to attempts to maintain or restore supposed energetic flow and balance, not to activities targeting any defined molecular entity or receptor[3][8].

Mechanism of action

Non-pharmacological; acupuncture, moxibustion, massage purportedly "regulate flow" through acupoints on meridians\nNo known molecular mechanism

03

Biological functions

Regulation of Qi/bioenergy flow (TCM concept)Hypothetical connection and communication between organs and tissuesNot a biochemical signaling entity
04

Disease associations

Regarded in TCM as linked to disease and dysfunction when imbalancedNot associated with specific molecular disease mechanisms
05

Safety considerations

Safety concerns are those of acupuncture or TCM practice in general; "meridian system regulation" itself does not present molecular therapeutic safety challenges
06

Interacting drugs

None; regulation is via acupuncture, massage, Qigong, herbal remedies—not drug interactions
07

Biomarkers

None; no accepted biomarkers for meridian system function or regulation in biomedicine
