Overview

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic used intravenously to treat serious bacterial infections in humans, such as meningitis, intra-abdominal infections, pneumonia, sepsis, complicated urinary tract infections, and anthrax. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including resistant strains, and acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, which leads to bacterial lysis and death. Meropenem is stable against many types of beta-lactamases, enzymes that confer bacterial resistance to antibiotics, but it can be somewhat susceptible to hydrolysis by metallo-beta-lactamases. The drug is not a biological target itself but rather acts on bacterial targets (penicillin-binding proteins); thus, listing "Meropenem" as a target is inaccurate. Meropenem should not be considered a therapeutic target or receptor. It is an antibiotic drug.
