Merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP-1) is the most abundant protein on the surface of the merozoite stage of *Plasmodium* species. MSP-1 plays a critical role in parasite development and erythrocyte invasion, making it a key target for malaria vaccine research. It exists as a precursor protein that is cleaved into several subunits, including p83, p30, p38, and p42, with the C-terminal fragment p19 remaining attached to the parasite surface after invasion. MSP-1 interacts with other merozoite surface proteins and erythrocyte components to facilitate invasion.
