Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-mediated immunomodulation refers to the capacity of MSCs to regulate immune responses through the secretion of soluble factors (cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, prostaglandins, extracellular vesicles) and direct cell-to-cell contact. This results in the suppression of excessive inflammation or autoimmunity while promoting tissue repair. MSCs interact with various immune cells including T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, and macrophages, shifting them towards tolerogenic or anti-inflammatory phenotypes. MSCs are being investigated for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, graft-versus-host disease, inflammatory conditions, and tissue injuries.
