Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) secreted factors, collectively known as the MSC secretome, encompass a diverse array of bioactive molecules released by MSCs. These include soluble proteins (such as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors), extracellular matrix components, metabolic products, and nucleic acids. The secretome can be released freely or packaged within extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes and microvesicles. The composition of the MSC secretome is influenced by the tissue source of the MSCs, donor variability, culture conditions, and preconditioning stimuli. The therapeutic effects are primarily mediated through paracrine signaling rather than direct differentiation into target tissues.
