Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells found in various tissues. They play a central role in tissue repair and regeneration through paracrine signaling, immunomodulation, limited direct differentiation, cellular interactions, and matrix remodeling. MSCs secrete bioactive molecules that promote cell survival, proliferation, and migration; enhance angiogenesis; regulate inflammation; and remodel the ECM. They have therapeutic applications in wound healing, chronic ulcer treatment, fibrosis reduction, and modulation of immune-mediated diseases.
MSCs exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling (secretion of growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, and extracellular vesicles), immunomodulation (suppression of inflammation and promotion of pro-reparative macrophage polarization), limited direct differentiation, cellular interactions/niche support, and matrix remodeling.
