Overview

Mesoderm induction early response protein 2 (MIER2) is a protein-coding gene and member of the MIER family of transcriptional regulators[3][7][8]. MIER2 functions primarily as a transcriptional co-repressor by binding to histone deacetylases (HDACs) and participating in chromatin remodeling, resulting in repression of gene transcription by RNA polymerase II[1][3][7][8]. It is found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus, acting in complex with other proteins to regulate gene expression[1][8]. Key roles for MIER2 include the regulation of neuronal genes, in part by interaction with the REST repressor complex[1]. It has not been directly implicated as a drug target nor is it currently linked to major therapeutic modalities. MIER2 is associated with at least one disorder—De Quervain disease—but broader disease implications have not been firmly established[3].
