Overview

Mesoderm specific transcript pseudogene 2 (MESTP2) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome, located on chromosome 6. As a pseudogene, MESTP2 is a nonfunctional DNA segment that resembles the active mesoderm specific transcript (MEST) gene, but lacks the necessary elements to produce a functional protein or participate in normal gene regulatory functions. To date, there is no evidence that MESTP2 is implicated in disease, biological function, or drug interactions. MESTP2 is not a known therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or signaling molecule. There may be confusion with the "Mesoderm specific transcript" (MEST) gene, which is protein-coding, involved in development and imprinting, and possibly implicated in cancer and related diseases. MESTP2, however, is a nonfunctional paralog with no evidence of functional transcripts or protein. No known aliases or alternative names for MESTP2 are listed in main gene/protein databases. Pseudogenes like MESTP2 may be transcribed at low levels, but these transcripts usually have no known function and are not considered biologically active. If you are seeking a target for therapeutic, diagnostic, or biomarker purposes, MESTP2 is not valid—consider the parent functional gene MEST instead.

02

Biological functions

None clearly established; pseudogenes typically do not encode functional proteins or clear biological functions
03

Disease associations

None known, unlike the parent gene MEST, which is associated with imprinting disorders and cancer. No evidence MESTP2 has independent disease relevance.
