Overview

MEST intronic transcript 1, antisense RNA (MESTIT1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the paternal allele within an intron of the MEST gene but in the opposite orientation. It shares a promoter region with one of the MEST gene’s promoters and is mostly expressed in the testis and mature spermatozoa, suggesting roles in development and imprinting. As a natural antisense transcript (NAT), MESTIT1 likely modulates MEST gene expression via chromatin modification, transcript masking, or transcriptional interference, mechanisms typical for lncRNAs involved in epigenetic regulation[1][2][4][5]. Disease associations are proposed for Silver-Russell syndrome 1 and glioma susceptibility, but it is not regarded as a classic therapeutic target[1]. Note: - MESTIT1 does not encode a protein and is not considered a direct druggable target. - Its principal role is regulatory, mainly through epigenetic effects on the MEST gene and control of allele-specific expression[1][2][4]. - No direct drugs, mechanisms, or biomarker roles are established for this transcript as of the search and current knowledge.
