Overview

Metabolic alkalinization (more properly termed *metabolic alkalosis*) is a **physiological or pathological state** characterized by elevated blood and tissue pH due to an excess of bicarbonate or loss of acid from the body[1][2][5]. This is not a protein, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other molecular therapeutic target but rather a clinical condition that results from various disturbances (e.g., vomiting, excessive diuretic use, excessive bicarbonate intake, or certain endocrine disorders) that alter the body's acid-base homeostasis[1][2][6]. Metabolic alkalosis can have significant clinical consequences and often requires targeted therapy to correct the underlying cause, but "metabolic alkalinization" itself cannot be targeted by drugs as a discrete molecular entity[1][3][5].
