Metabolic detoxification is a complex biological process by which the body, primarily through the liver, chemically modifies xenobiotics such as drugs and environmental toxins to facilitate their elimination [StatPearls, 2023]. This system is traditionally divided into three phases: Phase I involves functionalization (oxidation, reduction, or hydrolysis) often mediated by the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme superfamily; Phase II involves conjugation with polar moieties like glucuronic acid or glutathione; and Phase III involves the active transport of these metabolites out of cells via efflux transporters [Wikipedia, 2024; NIH, 2022]. While this pathway is essential for protecting the organism from chemical insult, it is also a major source of clinical challenges, including drug-drug interactions and the inadvertent production of reactive, toxic intermediates [Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2010]. Because "Metabolic detoxification" refers to a broad physiological pathway involving hundreds of distinct enzymes and transporters rather than a single molecular entity, it is classified as a biological process rather than a specific therapeutic target [PubChem, 2024].
