Overview

Metabolic response refers to the systemic physiological and biochemical changes that occur within an organism in response to external or internal stimuli, such as nutrient intake, physical exertion, or pathological stress (StatPearls, 2023). It is characterized by the coordinated regulation of metabolic pathways—including glycolysis, lipolysis, and proteolysis—to maintain energy homeostasis and support cellular repair (PubMed, PMID: 21934373). In clinical contexts, the metabolic response to injury or critical illness is often divided into 'ebb' and 'flow' phases, involving significant hormonal shifts in catecholamines, cortisol, and glucagon (NIH, 2022). This response is essential for survival during acute stress but can become maladaptive in chronic conditions, leading to insulin resistance or muscle wasting. Because 'metabolic response' is a complex physiological outcome involving hundreds of enzymes and signaling molecules, it is not considered a single therapeutic target. Instead, it serves as a critical clinical endpoint for drugs that target specific receptors or enzymes to treat metabolic disorders like Type 2 Diabetes or obesity. Understanding the nuances of this response allows for the development of precision medicine approaches to manage metabolic health and recovery in intensive care settings.
