Target intelligence / Profile preview
Glucose homeostasis refers to the physiological process of maintaining blood glucose levels within a narrow range through a complex network of metabolic signaling pathways involving the liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue (StatPearls, 2023). The primary regulators are the hormones insulin and glucagon; insulin facilitates glucose uptake into cells and suppresses hepatic glucose production, while glucagon promotes glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis during fasting states (NIH, 2022). Dysregulation of these signaling cascades is a hallmark of metabolic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and metabolic syndrome, often resulting from insulin resistance or impaired beta-cell function (PubMed, 2021). Therapeutic interventions target various components of these pathways, such as the GLP-1 receptor, SGLT2 transporters, and the enzyme DPP-4, to restore glycemic control (Nature Reviews Endocrinology, 2020). Effective therapeutic strategies aim to restore the balance of glucose flux to prevent long-term microvascular and macrovascular complications.
Modulation of insulin sensitivity, enhancement of glucose-dependent insulin secretion, inhibition of glucagon release, and reduction of renal glucose reabsorption (StatPearls, 2023; NIH, 2022).
