Metal ion-dependent enzymes, also known as metalloenzymes, are a broad class of enzymes that require one or more metal ions to perform their biological catalytic functions. These metal ions can act as essential cofactors, contributing to the enzyme's structural stability and/or directly participating in the catalytic mechanism. They participate in a wide range of biological processes including: DNA/RNA synthesis and repair, metabolism of carbohydrates/lipids/proteins, detoxification reactions, and signal transduction. Inhibitors can work by chelating the essential metal ion(s) from the enzyme's active site or directly binding to the active site.
