Metal-response element-binding transcription factor 2 (MTF2)

Target
MTF2
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Polycomb group protein, Chromatin-associated protein
01

Overview

Metal-response element-binding transcription factor 2 (MTF2) is a member of the polycomb group proteins and acts as a chromatin-associated transcription factor. It serves as a sub-stoichiometric component of the polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), enhancing the recruitment of PRC2 to specific genomic sites such as Hox gene clusters and stabilizing trimethylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27me3)[2][4]. MTF2 plays crucial roles in embryonic development, differentiation, and transcriptional silencing of target genes. While it is not a classical therapeutic target such as an enzyme or receptor, alterations in its function and expression are implicated in developmental disorders and cancer[2][5]. There are currently no drugs known to directly target MTF2.

Biomarkers

H3K27me3 levels at certain gene clusters, e.g., Hox cluster, may indirectly reflect MTF2/PRC2 activity[2][4]
