Metal-responsive Transcription Factor 1 (MTF-1)

Target
MTF-1
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein
01

Overview

Metal-responsive transcription factor 1 (MTF-1) is a highly conserved, zinc-dependent transcription factor that plays a central role in the regulation of genes involved in metal homeostasis and cellular stress responses. It binds to metal response elements (MREs) in the promoters of target genes, such as metallothioneins, and activates their transcription in response to heavy metals, oxidative stress, or hypoxia. MTF-1 is essential for embryonic development and liver function, and its disruption can lead to various pathological conditions, including increased susceptibility to metal toxicity, impaired immune responses, and potentially cancer.

Mechanism of action

MTF-1 is a transcription factor that binds to metal response elements (MREs) in the promoter regions of target genes, leading to increased gene expression upon activation by heavy metals or other stressors.
