Metallophosphoesterase domain containing protein 2 (MPPED2) is a human protein encoded by the MPPED2 gene on chromosome 11p13. It belongs to the metallophosphoesterase family of enzymes, with weak phosphodiesterase activity in vitro. The protein is highly expressed in fetal brain tissue and is considered important in nervous system development. Decreased MPPED2 expression is reported in various cancers (including cervical, breast, and neuroblastoma), correlating with cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. While studied as a possible tumor suppressor and diagnostic marker in oncology, particularly in cervical carcinoma related to high-risk human papillomavirus, MPPED2 is not currently an established therapeutic target and has no approved drug modulators.
