Metalloproteinases are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that play crucial roles in the degradation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). They are involved in various physiological processes, including tissue remodeling, wound healing, and angiogenesis, as well as pathological conditions such as cancer metastasis and arthritis. Their activity is tightly regulated by endogenous inhibitors called TIMPs. They are considered therapeutic targets, and inhibitors targeting their active sites or regulatory mechanisms have been explored clinically.
