Overview

Metallothionein 1I, pseudogene (MT1IP) is one of several non-functional sequence variants (pseudogenes) in the metallothionein 1 family found in humans. Pseudogenes such as MT1IP have accumulated mutations (including changes at acceptor splice sites, amino acid replacements, or deletions) that prevent the formation of a functional protein. As such, MT1IP is not expressed as an active metallothionein protein, does not participate in cellular metal regulation, oxidative stress response, or immunity, and is not considered a therapeutic, diagnostic, or research target. Its presence is mainly of genomic and evolutionary interest within the metallothionein gene family, which includes both active genes and several other pseudogenes.
