Metaxin-1 (MTX1) is a protein located on the outer mitochondrial membrane and is a core component of the mitochondrial protein translocation/import machinery, often referred to as the mitochondrial outer membrane import complex protein 1[3][4][5]. It facilitates the import of proteins into mitochondria and is essential for embryonic development in mice[2][4][5]. MTX1 participates in complexes that help traffic mitochondria within cells, notably in neurons, contributing to proper mitochondrial distribution in axons and dendrites (based on functional data from model organisms, with conserved roles in humans)[1]. It is not generally classified as a therapeutic target (such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor), and no approved or experimental drugs are known to modulate MTX1 directly. Disruption of MTX1 or its protein complexes leads to defects in mitochondrial protein import and may result in cellular dysfunction, but direct links to specific diseases in humans are not well established[5].
