Methaemoglobin (MetHb)

Target
MetHb
Molecular classification
Metalloprotein, Hemoglobin derivative
01

Overview

Methaemoglobin (MetHb) is a form of hemoglobin with iron in the ferric (Fe³⁺) state, unable to bind or transport oxygen. Elevated levels cause methemoglobinemia, impairing tissue oxygenation. It is normally kept at low levels by the enzyme cytochrome b5-methemoglobin reductase. Methemoglobinemia can be inherited or acquired through exposure to certain drugs or chemicals.
